Below are the most frequently asked questions
related to computers, upgrades, service, and maintenance.
Computer Answers
Should I buy a
new computer?
Many people often find themselves wanting a new
computer. Either their old one is no longer sufficient
for the current programs installed, or the user's
needs have changed. The available free resources
offerred on the Internet today such as computerized
banking, news services, e-mail, bill paying, and
search services often justify the expense through
convenience alone. Students, parents, grandparents,
and the entire family can now benefit from what
the computer has to offer.
When should I upgrade
my computer?
There are many reasons to upgrade a computer.
Computer upgrades should be performed when a noticable
change in your computer has been noticed. A slow
running computer may have a one or all of the
following symptoms: full hard drive or an older
drive with a low transfer rate, insuffucient memory
for the currently installed applications, or a
slow processor being overworked. There are several
ways to determine which symptom or combination
of symptoms is causing the computer to run slow,
however these operations should be performed by
a trained technician.
What type of new
computer do I need?
The type of computer needed is generally determined
by the work that is to be performed on the computer.
If the computer is to be used for gaming it should
have as many high end features as possible to
deliver the content to the user that the programmers
had intended. Slow moving computers make for a
rather dull gamming experience. If the computer
is to be used for e-mailing and web surfing, then
most of the high end features can be reduced or
eliminated. If the computer is to be used for
running office applications than a computer in
the middle spectrum is advisable. It all depends
on the work to be performed.
What is RAM?
Ram is what the computer uses to store information
while the computer is running. It is a temporary
storage bin for programs and applications currently
being utilized by the computer. When you work
on a document, the computer has it stored in RAM
for fast access, rather that on the hard drive.
Once the document is saved and closed, it is then
taken out of RAM and written to the hard drive.
Ram has different speeds, sizes, and purposes.
Be sure to consult your technician as to what
type of ram is best suited for your needs.
What do I do after
a hard drive crash?
Hard drives crash and that's all there is to that.
The only way to recover safely, and with as little
down time as possible is to back up your data
frequently. If the data is backed up porperly,
recovery is usually a simple procedure. However,
with out back ups to restore from it is generally
required that the technician perform data racovery
processes on the crashed disc to restore the data.
Many times this can be done sucessfully, however
when it cannot be, everything is lost and must
be replaced.
After a hard drive crash, a new drive
must be installed, configured with an operating
system, and must have all the software re-installed.
Once complete the data may be restored to the
machine with the back ups. Without back ups, the
first three steps must be performed and then an
additional step must be performed. Data Recovery.
What is data
transfer?
Data transfer is the movement of data from one
hard drive to another form of media or another
hard drive. This is usually performed when upgrading
a drive, or recovering from a hard drive crash.
The data is physically moved from one location
to another.
What is data
recovery?
Data recovery is the removal of data from a damaged
hard disk. The damaged drive must be removed from
the computer and then processed using data recovery
techniques.
Should I back
up my files?
Absolutely! Data back up is the difference between
a usually inexpensive hard drive replacement /
data transfer vs. a costly data recovery process.
Backing up data can sometimes be a burden, however
it can be far less burdensome that complete data
loss!
