Benefits of a Networked
Office?
Networks can improve the efficiency and cost
effectiveness of office work by allowing you to:
- Store commonly used files on a shared drive
for easier access.
- Share files in electronic form to reduce printing
costs and paper waste.
- Share resources, such as hard drives, printers,
scanners, etc., to get more use out of office
equipment.
- Share software with multi-user licenses.
- Send files to individual coworkers with intra-office
e-mail.
- Perform data backups quicker and easier with
files on shared drives.
- Give coworkers access to view files on your
hard drive from their computer.
- Connect your entire office to the Internet
through one line.
What Type Of Equipment
Is Needed For A Network?
Generally, installing a network requires limited
specialized equipment. A router will be required
for any network office installation. Hubs and
switches can also be utilized to partition your
network to accommodate different needs for each
department. Your office will also need to be wired
with Ethernet Category 5 UTP wiring. This type
of cable backbone accommodate future growth easily,
and makes expanding your network over time simple.
How Much Does A Network
Cost?
Network installation costs can vary drastically
in price depending upon the amount of cable run,
and the hours required to configure the equipment.
Setting up a 5 computer peer to peer network can
cost as little as $200 depending upon the cable
required, and network readiness of the computers
to be joined over the network. A 50 computer,
multi-domain, fresh installation requiring cables,
wall outlets, network cards, with specialized
equipment will cost thousands more. Usually the
rule of thumb is $1.50 per foot for wiring costs.
What Type Of Networks Are
There Are?
There are many types of wiring configurations,
cable types, and hardware configurations. There
are two types of networks. The first is a Peer
to Peer network. Peer to Peer networks are simple
to administer, inexpensive to install, but provide
little or no security. The second type of network
is a client server, this is where security policies
are stored on a server and enforced by the server.
Security is far more stringent however implementation
costs will rise. Peer to Peer networking can sometimes
be the perfect answer for some businesses, but
if security and future growth are a concern the
client server model might be best.
Will I Need To
Hire A Network Administrator?
The hiring of a network administrator depends
entirely upon the network size and the type of
software installed. Most networks (fewer than
15 computers) once set up, usually need little
or no maintenance. In the event of equipment malfunction,
usually a service call to a local company can
have the issue resolved in little or no time.
Larger networks with more complex configurations
usually require some maintenance Service contracts
are usually required, however the cost is generally
much less than the annual salary of a trained
network administrator.
